Three Internal IRBs: More Support for Your Research
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has three internal IRBs. The Social/Behavioral IRB and Biomedical IRB committees meets once per month for convened board meetings. The Expedited/Exempt IRB focusses on processing applications outside of convened meetings. It does not have a regular, standing meeting schedule, but can be assembled on an ad hoc basis. The OPRS staff assigns each project to the most appropriate IRB for review based upon the research project and board member expertise.
IRB committee members also complete expedited reviews throughout each month.

Social/Behavioral IRB
The Social/Behavioral IRB reviews social science, behavioral science, education, business, and other non-health related research. It meets the fourth Tuesday of every month.
Biomedical IRB
The Biomedical IRB reviews medical, health-related, FDA-regulated, and other physical sciences research. It meets the second Thursday of every month.
