Can UIUC provide IRB approval for a researcher outside the US?

Question

Can UIUC provide IRB approval for a researcher outside the US?

Answer

No, UIUC cannot provide IRB oversight for international researchers.  If you are working with a researcher from another country, they must obtain the required research oversight from their IRB or REB (Research Ethics Board) or equivalent research oversight body from their country.

Researchers outside the US are not subject to the federal Single IRB mandate in the US.  If you are working on a project that is subject to the Single IRB mandate, all of the US sites involved in the project will be required to utilize the SIRB process but the international sites can utilize their own oversight boards. FDA-regulated research may have separate requirements for international sites, please review FDA regulations and discuss with OPRS.
