Do I have to compensate research participants?

Question

Do I have to compensate research participants?

Answer

No. There is no requirement that a researcher must provide compensation for participation in the study.  Compensation may be provided to reimburse participants for their time, effort, or for other expenses.  Consent documents must clearly state any costs or compensation to participants to ensure a potential participant has full information to make an informed decision about whether they would like to participate in your research.
