Urgent Reminder: IRBOnline Transition Deadline Approaching

Details

The following announcement was sent via the OPRS/IRB Listserv on July 30, 2024.  If you would like to be added to the listserv, please email irb@illinois.edu

Act now to avoid interruptions to your research!

Deadline: October 31

All human subject research projects must be approved in IRBOnline by October 31, 2024. Any previously approved research projects that have not received approval in IRBOnline will be administratively closed on November 1, 2024. Only projects and research activities that have been approved in the IRBOnline system can continue after November 1, 2024.

  • Every UIUC researcher with active human subject research protocols (per OPRS records) has been emailed a list of all protocols that require transition to IRBOnline or closure. These emails were sent from IRB@illinois.edu in early 2024. We will send additional reminders in the coming weeks.
  • Every active human subject research project approved as exempt, minimal risk, or greater than minimal risk must be submitted and approved in IRBOnline in order to continue after 10/31/2024.
  • Every project that utilizes an external IRB (“reliance” or single IRB review) must submit a Facilitated Review application in IRBOnline in order to continue conducting research procedures after 10/31/2024.  Please see your email from IRB Reliance for instructions. If you have external IRB approval for a project and were not contacted by OPRS, please email us immediately at irb-reliance@illinois.edu

Allow sufficient lead time to transition projects

October 31, 2024 is the deadline for approval of the project, not submission to IRBonline.  Studies should be submitted in IRBOnline as soon as possible to allow adequate time for review. Due to the upcoming deadline to transition protocols, OPRS is anticipating a higher-than-normal volume of submissions and inquiries throughout the fall semester. Turnaround times may be longer than normal.

Paper amendments no longer accepted

As we approach the transition deadline, there will be changes to "paper" amendments:

  • Between now and September 1, 2024, the only "paper" amendments that will be accepted for studies that have not yet transitioned are Research Team amendments.
  • Effective September 1, 2024, no paper amendments of any kind will be accepted for non-transitioned studies. Any needed changes should be made as part of your IRBOnline submission to transition the protocol.

Thank you to all investigators who have successfully transitioned their protocols to IRBOnline. We are in the final stretch of the transition process - please reach out to irb@illinois.edu if you have questions or concerns!
