Privacy and Confidentiality

Description

The Common Rule (45 CFR 46.111(a)(7)) requires that as a criteria of approval of research, the IRB ensures adequate provisions have been made in the research plan to protect the privacy of subjects and to maintain the confidentiality of data.

The IRB's role is to determine that the provisions that are in place are appropriate based upon the research plan and sensitivity of the data.

In some cases the IRB will request an assessment and advice from the UIUC Privacy Office.  The Privacy Office will provide recommendations for the IRB and PIs upon request.

The UIUC Privacy Office and University of Illinois System provide information and assistance relating to specific programs or data storage platforms.

Information related to international privacy laws can be found in "International Research" topics.
