Reliance

Description

"Reliance" is the term used when an IRB provides IRB oversight for someone who is external to their institution.  That person "relies" on the IRB review of an IRB they are not affiliated with.

Example Scenarios

  1. UIUC researchers are working with Indiana University researchers.  The IU IRB acts as the IRB for all sites.  UIUC relies on IU IRB for oversight.
  2. UIUC researchers are working with Indiana University researchers.  The UIUC IRB acts as the IRB for all sites.  IU relies on UIUC IRB for oversight.
  3. Large multi-center study uses Advarra IRB (a commercial IRB).  UIUC relies on Advarra for IRB oversight.
  4. UIUC researchers are working with a corporate partner to conduct research. The corporate partner relies on UIUC IRB for oversight.
  5. UIUC researchers and Carle physicians are working on a project together.  UIUC relies on Carle IRB for oversight.
  6. UIUC researchers are working with an individual unrelated to any academic institution.  The individual relies on UIUC IRB for oversight.

The first step to any reliance relationship involving UIUC is for the UIUC PI to submit a Reliance Consultation Request
