PURPOSE

To provide advice and feedback to the Director related to the function of the Office for the Protection of Research Subjects and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Institutional Review Boards (IRBs).

SCOPE

The OPRS Advisory Committee is created as a standing committee for the purpose of advising the OPRS/IRB Director. The committee is formed to give advice and recommendations. Decisions regarding policies and procedures for OPRS and IRBs will remain at the discretion of the OPRS Director, IRB Chairs, and IRBs, as applicable.

MEMBERSHIP

Members of the Advisory Committee will be appointed for a one-year term by the OPRS Director. IRB Chairs and IRB Vice-Chairs will become members of the Advisory Committee in conjunction with their role as IRB Chair and IRB Vice-Chair. 

Additional committee members (non- IRB Chair or Vice-Chair) will be appointed by the OPRS Director based upon their experience with human subject research. Consideration shall be given to diversify the committee with individuals not affiliated with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

IRB members may be appointed to the Advisory Committee in addition to their role as an IRB member. The number of additional members on the committee shall not exceed the number of IRB Chair and Vice-Chair members.

PROCEDURES

  1. Meetings
    1. Meetings will be held as needed at the discretion of the Director. Minutes and reports will not be required, but may occur. If meeting minutes or follow-up reports are created, they will be distributed to committee members via email.
    2. The Director may determine that individual conversations with committee members may be most appropriate based upon topic.
    3. Committee members may be asked to attend an IRB meeting to facilitate discussion of topics at the request of the Director.
