Carle IRB for Non-Exempt Research

Description

Carle IRB as the Reviewing IRB for Non-Exempt Research

This pathway is used for projects that are expected to be minimal risk or greater than minimal risk.  This means they will require either Expedited Review or Convened Board Review.  Projects that involve medical interventions or prospective collection of biological samples often require these types of reviews.  Carle IRB and UIUC IRB work together to determine the expected pathway and will let you know if this is the path you should use.

The process for this pathway is the same as the process when any external IRB is the reviewing IRB.  This means researchers will follow the standard UIUC single IRB review process for relying on an external IRB

Step 1: The standard Carle IRB application should be submitted to the Carle IRB.

Step 2: A Facilitated Review application is submitted to UIUC.  Due to the close relationship between Carle and UIUC, when Carle IRB is the reviewing IRB, Steps 1 & 2 of the Facilitated Review process can be skipped and researchers can go straight to Step 3, submitting the application.

As with any use of the Facilitated Review process, a researcher must have obtained the IRB Approval letter (from Carle) AND the HRPP Activation letter (from UIUC) before the UIUC researchers may conduct research procedures.
